What has the military to do with freedom?

From Ghandi to Switzerland, there are countless examples, that the military is as unnessary for freedom as a mud pie. East Eurpe din't blast the Iron curain away with bombs in 1989, it was 40 years of pressure on a failing sytem. which lifted the iron curtain. There is nothing wrong with a guard for Homeland Protection, but the Pentagon is as obsolete, as its billion dollar war toys. Why do we need a military outside of the USA?
