Crash vs. Correction, how do we tell the difference?

Everybody is calling the current financial woes a correction, what evidence is there to justify that it is merely a correction and not a crash? Whats to say its not the beginning of a crash? Or even it is a crash being labeled a correction to protect the market from media sensationalism and further damage?
